'Halfbreed' Mother (2012)
My blankets are ‘story blankets’ on which I collage images of family, (from personal collection & public archives) with original handwriting, beadwork and embroidery. On this blanket the question “Are you a halfbreed, indian or other?” and the reply “Halfbreed.” is an image from the original Northwest Territories Land Scrip application made for my gr. gr. grandmother in 1900. Scrip was given to Métis people as a way to extinguish indigenous rights.
Cotton woven wall blanket selectively beaded with #10 white seed beads. This blanket hangs using a curtain rod through the hand-stitched sleeve on the back of the piece. It is approximately 72 x 56 inches.
